iWolf ISDN BRI Interface cards

What is ISDN BRI?

Basic Rate Interface (BRI) often referred to as  Basic Rate Access (2B+D, 2B1D) is an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) technology designed predominantly to connect to subscriber lines comparable to those that are used for voice-grade telephone services.

BRI interfaces provide two B channels (bearer channels) per port supporting 64 Kbps each and one D channel (data channel) providing 16 Kbps.

The bearer channels can be used for voice or data. The data channel is used for control/signalling information and X.25 packet networking. The two bearer channels can be combined through “channel bonding”, delivering a total data rate of 128 Kbps. BRI ISDN services are primarily installed for home and small business use in most countries.

Interfaces

The Basic Rate Interface (BRI) is split in two sections;

1)    The S/T reference point or “In-house cabling system” from the ISDN terminal to the NT (network)

2)    Used to transmit from the NT to the “U reference point” ie. central office.

The in-house cabling system specifications are defined in section I.430 of the industry standards outlined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The S/T Interface uses four wires; one pair for the uplink and the other for the downlink.  Offering full-duplex operation the I.430 protocol defines 48-bit packets comprising of 16 bits from the Bearer 1 channel, 16 bits from bearer 2 channel, 4 bits from the data channel and a further 12 bits used for synchronisation purposes. Each packet is sent at a rate of 4 kHz, resulting in an aggregate bit rate of 192 Kbps, delivering a maximum possible throughput of 144 Kbps. The S/T interface supports point-to-point and point-to-multipoint operations, The maximum length of “point-to-point’ is 900 meters and the 300 meters for “point-to-multipoint”.

The U(p) Interface uses only two wires and delivers 144 Kbps throughput, 12 Kbps sync, 4 Kbps maintenance. Its combined bit rate is 160 Kbps.  The signals on the U reference point are encoded by either one of two modulation techniques, 2B1Q or 4B3T. The U(k0) interface uses one pair with echo cancellation for the last mile of cable between the telephone exchange and the Network Termination Unit (NTU). The maximum length of this BRI section is 8 km.
