What is ISDN PRI?

Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) telecommunications interface standard used for transmitting across multiple DS0 voice and data channels between the network and users.

PRI is the global standard for delivering telecommunication services to larger corporate offices for SMB enterprises. In the United States and Canada, T-carrier (T1) lines are used as opposed to the E-carrier (E1) line in Europe.  T1 lines are comprised of 24 channels, 23 x 64Kbps bearer channels and 1 x 64 Kbps data (delta) channel delivering a total of 1.544 Mbps. In Europe and Australia E1 is used. It is comprised of 30 x 64Kbps bearer channels and 2 x 64Kbps data delivering a total of 2.048 Mbps. The E1 line has one timeslot which is not considered to be a B or D channel.

 

Overview.

Fewer active bearer channels (B channels) are used on fractional T1 lines. Bearer channels are sometimes called user channels. More channels can be acquired by using more T1s.

Primary Rate Interface (PRI) interfaces are primarily used by SME’s and Large Corporate Enterprises with digital and IP PBX Systems to provide digital connectivity to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

B-channels can be used easily reassigned on the fly when required to deliver special services such as video conferences. PRI channels and direct inward dialling are also a common method of routing inbound calls to VoIP gateways from legacy PSTN lines.

iWolf ISDN PRI Interface cards are available in 1,2,4 and 8 port configurations providing up to 240 bearer (user) channels and able to support T1/E1/J1 transmission protocols. iWISDN PRI series interfaces support all standard communications industry protocols including Primary Rate ISDN (PRI) E1/T1/J1 for voice, PPP, Cisco, HDLC, and Frame Relay data modes. Line-side and trunk-side interfaces are both supported.

Compatible with all flavours of Asterisk iWolf ISDN gateways are ideal for Open Source and proprietary IP PBX Systems, IVR projects, Voice Switch, IVR, and VoIP gateway applications.
